Noorderlicht was originally built in 1910 in Germany as a three-masted schooner but in 1991 she was re-rigged and refitted as a well-balanced two-masted schooner. Strenghtened at the bow, but with no ice class she is capable of sailing the seven seas.  Stockholm passengers tend to be Mixed around 50 and American & European. When all cabins have double occupancy, the ship provides a space ratio of 30.1 tons per passenger and a crew to passenger ratio of one for every 1.7 passengers. At full capacity the space ratio is 30.1 tons per passenger and the crew ratio is one to 1.7 passengers.

There is deck space for observing scenery and wildlife. The vessel carries two sturdy Zodiac crafts for beach landings. Whilst sailing the assistance of the passengers is appreciated for handling the sails and taking the helm.

Shipboard clothing is informal and casual. Jeans, slacks, casual shirts and deck or running shoes are the normal garb. A padded ski jacket or down parka, scarf, balaclava and three pairs of gloves would be good for exploration in polar regions.
